How does Medicaid transportation work in Nassau County?
Nassau County is served by MAS (Medical Answering Services), the statewide broker contracted by New York State Medicaid to manage Non-Emergency Medical Transportation. MAS verifies your eligibility, confirms the appointment, and assigns the trip to a credentialed provider like DachiPlus. The provider bills Medicaid; you pay nothing. The booking rules are statewide — our complete MAS guide covers them in full — but what a Nassau trip actually looks like is shaped by the county itself, and that is what the rest of this page is about.
Where Nassau County Medicaid rides actually go
Nassau's medical geography is unusually concentrated. Thirteen hospitals sit inside roughly 285 square miles, so the same handful of destinations account for most Medicaid trips in the county. Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, the county's public hospital, carries a large share of the Medicaid caseload and is the most common single destination we run to. NYU Langone Hospital — Long Island (Winthrop) in Mineola, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside take most of the rest.
Recurring treatment is the other half of the picture. We serve ten dialysis centres across the county — Fresenius clinics in Hempstead, Bellmore and Hicksville, the NuHealth unit on the NUMC campus in East Meadow, and DaVita in Great Neck among them — plus eleven adult day health programmes and more than thirty skilled nursing facilities. Those recurring trips are exactly the ones worth putting on a standing order rather than booking week by week.
What Nassau's layout means for your ride
Because the county is compact, a typical Nassau Medicaid trip is short — often under ten miles, and rarely the forty-minute run that the East End of Suffolk regularly demands. That has a practical consequence worth knowing when you book: short trips are easier for MAS to place at short notice, but they are also the ones most often batched with other passengers, so a pickup window can still be wide even when the drive is brief. Ask for the window, not just the pickup time.
Two parts of the county need extra thought. Long Beach sits on a barrier island reached by bridge, so a trip off the island carries a fixed crossing that no route can shorten — build in the margin. And the villages along the Queens border, from Floral Park through Valley Stream, are often closer to a hospital in Queens than to one in Nassau; Medicaid will cover the trip to whichever facility your provider is at, but tell MAS the actual destination rather than assuming it must be in-county.
Who qualifies for free Medicaid rides in Nassau County?
You qualify if all three apply:
- You are an active New York State Medicaid member (Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care, HARP, or dual-eligible).
- You are traveling to a Medicaid-covered medical appointment (doctor, dialysis, chemo, therapy, imaging, lab work, etc.).
- You have no other free transportation option (public transit, family, facility-arranged transport).
How do I book a Medicaid ride in Nassau County?
- Call MAS at 1-844-666-6270 at least 72 hours before your appointment.
- Have ready: your Medicaid CIN, appointment date and time, medical provider's name and address, your pickup address, and your mobility needs (ambulatory, cane, walker, wheelchair).
- Request DachiPlus as your provider by name.
- Write down your confirmation number.
