What is MAS?

MAS stands for Medical Answering Services. It is the state-contracted broker that manages Medicaid Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) across most of New York State, including all of Long Island. If you have been searching for a "Medicaid cab" or "Medicaid taxi," this is that service: free, scheduled rides to medical appointments, booked through MAS and driven by local providers like DachiPlus. MAS does not own vehicles or employ drivers — it is a scheduling and verification layer that sits between Medicaid members and the transportation providers (like DachiPlus) that actually pick up and deliver patients.

When a Medicaid member needs a ride to a medical appointment, they call MAS. MAS verifies their eligibility, confirms the appointment, and assigns the trip to a credentialed provider in their area. The provider is paid by Medicaid; the member pays nothing.

What is the Medicaid transportation phone number in New York?

The Medicaid transportation phone number in New York is MAS at 1-844-666-6270 — the statewide Medical Answering Services line where Medicaid members book free non-emergency medical rides, including across Nassau and Suffolk County on Long Island.

Call hours are generally Monday–Friday, 7 AM–6 PM; a weekend urgent line is available.

What is MAS transportation?

MAS transportation is the free Medicaid ride benefit that Medical Answering Services (MAS) coordinates for New York Medicaid members — the trips to dialysis, doctor's appointments, and treatments that Medicaid covers in full. MAS itself doesn't drive: it books the trip and assigns it to a credentialed provider like DachiPlus, who picks you up. It is sometimes miswritten as mass transportation for Medicaid, but MAS stands for Medical Answering Services, and it is a ride-booking service for medical appointments, not mass transit or a public bus. The MAS transportation phone number is 1-844-666-6270 — call it, request DachiPlus by name, and your ride across Nassau or Suffolk County is arranged at no cost to you.

Who qualifies for free Medicaid rides?

You qualify for free MAS-coordinated transportation if all three of these are true:

  • You are an active New York State Medicaid member (Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care, HARP, or certain dual-eligible plans).
  • You are traveling to a Medicaid-covered medical service (most appointments qualify — see below).
  • You have no other free transportation option (public transit, family, or facility-arranged transport).

You do not need to prove financial hardship beyond Medicaid eligibility itself. The Medicaid card is the ticket.

If you don't have Medicaid, or your trip isn't covered, you can still book directly as a private-pay rider. Rates are published upfront: use the fare calculator to see what your trip would cost before you call.

How do I book a Medicaid ride step by step?

  1. Wait until your appointment is confirmed. MAS will not book speculative rides.
  2. Call MAS at least 72 hours before your appointment. Same-day requests are usually rejected unless urgent.
  3. Have ready: your Medicaid CIN (client identification number), the appointment date and exact time, the medical provider's name and address, and your pickup address.
  4. Tell MAS your mobility needs. Ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher, oxygen — be specific. This determines which vehicle is sent. If you must stay seated in your wheelchair, ask for an ambulette service rather than a car (see ambulette service on Long Island).
  5. Request DachiPlus by name. Say: "I would like DachiPlus assigned as my transportation provider." (More on this below.)
  6. Get your confirmation number. Write it down. You'll need it if anything changes.

Can't log in to the MAS website?

Please read first

DachiPlus is not MAS, and this page is not the MAS login. We are one of the transportation companies MAS can assign your trip to. We cannot see, change or reset your MAS account. The real sign-on page is on medanswering.com.

MAS runs the member website for New York Medicaid rides. With an account you can create, change and cancel trips at any time of day, any day of the week, according to the MAS enrollee account page. The website is one of two ways in. When it will not let you sign in, the phone books the same trips, so a login problem does not have to hold up a ride.

Forgot your username or password

The MAS sign-on page asks for your username first. It has a "Forgot Username?" link and a "Create an Account" link, and a note that MAS changed its login process but existing usernames and passwords still work. If the recovery steps do not get you in, call MAS at 1-844-666-6270. Only MAS can help with the account itself.

Setting up an account for the first time

MAS and the state Department of Health list the same six details for a new enrollee account: your first and last name, email address, cell phone number, Medicaid CIN or Medicaid number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your birth date. The CIN is printed on your Medicaid card; our guide to the Medicaid CIN number shows where. MAS suggests first confirming that it can authorize rides for you, so if you are not sure your coverage includes transportation, call before you set up the account.

Locked out, or the wrong address or phone on file

For an account that is locked, deactivated or will not accept your details, call the MAS contact center. Nassau and Suffolk are in the downstate region, which uses 1-844-666-6270. Enrollee services run Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM, and representatives take urgent trips and hospital discharges 24 hours a day. If your home address or phone number is wrong, fix it with Medicaid as well as telling MAS: the Department of Health asks members to keep their address and phone number up to date with Medicaid so rides reach the right door.

Book by phone while you sort it out

Do not let the account hold up the trip. MAS asks for three days' notice for routine appointments, so call as soon as the appointment is confirmed, give your CIN and appointment details, and ask for DachiPlus by name if you live in Nassau or Suffolk County. You can go back to booking online once the account works. Our guide to booking Medicaid transportation online covers what MAS asks for in each trip request.

How do I request DachiPlus through MAS?

New York Medicaid members can ask MAS for a specific transportation provider. The state's Medicaid Transportation Policy Manual (section 2.3, effective August 25, 2023, published on eMedNY) tells the broker to assign approvable trips "based first upon the medically appropriate mode of transportation, then by enrollee's choice among participating transportation vendors, and finally, at the discretion of the transportation broker." So MAS first sets the level of service your trip needs, and then your choice of company comes next. Choice can be limited: the Department of Health notes that sometimes a Preferred Provider covers a certain region. DachiPlus is a licensed non-emergency medical transportation provider serving Nassau and Suffolk County, so if we have availability for your trip type and time window, MAS can assign the trip to us. See our Medicaid transportation page for what's covered and how the free ride works.

Say this on the call

"When the MAS representative asks which provider I would like, please assign my trip to DachiPlus. I have used them before / I have been referred to them."

If MAS tells you DachiPlus isn't available for your specific date and time, you can ask whether a different time on the same day would work, or you can simply book through us privately by calling (516) 754-7777.

What trips does Medicaid cover?

Medicaid covers transportation to most medically necessary appointments. This includes:

  • Doctor and specialist appointments
  • Dialysis (typically standing orders, three times per week)
  • Chemotherapy and radiation
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Mental health and substance use treatment
  • Methadone clinics and opioid treatment programs
  • Diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, ultrasound)
  • Lab work and bloodwork
  • Dental appointments covered under Medicaid
  • Pharmacy visits when transportation to the pharmacy is medically necessary
  • Wound care, infusion therapy, and outpatient procedures
  • Hospital discharges back home

Medicaid generally does not cover routine social transportation, grocery shopping, or visits that are not tied to a specific medical service.

What is the 72-hour rule for Medicaid transportation?

The standard New York Medicaid rule is that transportation requests must be made at least three business days (72 hours) in advance. MAS uses this lead time to verify eligibility and assign a provider.

Exceptions where MAS will book on shorter notice:

  • Urgent care referred by a doctor
  • Hospital discharges — these are arranged same-day with the hospital case manager's help
  • Same-day appointments for urgent symptoms documented by the medical provider

If you have a same-day or short-notice need, call MAS and explain the situation. They have an urgent line.

How do standing orders work for recurring Medicaid transport?

If you have recurring medical appointments, most commonly dialysis three times per week, daily radiation cycles, or weekly chemotherapy, you do not need to call MAS before every trip. Instead, your medical provider sets up a standing order. Under the state's Standing Order Policy (effective October 1, 2020), MAS accepts standing orders only from the enrollee's medical provider through its online system; members and family cannot enter their own.

To get a standing order in place:

  1. Ask your dialysis center, clinic or doctor's office to enter a standing order in the MAS system.
  2. Give them the days of the week, treatment times, and how long the treatment will run. A standing order lasts no more than six months, and the provider renews it after that.
  3. Ask them to list DachiPlus as the preferred transportation provider; driver continuity matters most on recurring trips.
  4. Confirm with the office that the standing order is active.

What should I do if there's a problem with my Medicaid ride?

If the driver is late or no-shows

Call DachiPlus directly at (516) 754-7777. We can check on the vehicle and dispatch another if needed. If we cannot reach you for a confirmed trip, MAS records a no-show — repeated no-shows can affect future trip approvals.

If you need to cancel

Call MAS or your assigned provider as soon as possible. Same-day cancellations should still be reported even if the trip has already started.

If you have a complaint

MAS has a member complaint line. You can also file a complaint with the New York State Department of Health if you believe your transportation rights have been violated. Your choice of provider counts when MAS assigns a trip (after the medically appropriate mode is set), so if a company keeps letting you down, you can also ask MAS for a different one.

Not on Medicaid? Your other ride options

MAS only books rides for Medicaid members, but DachiPlus serves everyone. If you or a family member pay privately or use other coverage, start with the guide that fits your situation: medical transportation in Nassau County or medical transportation in Suffolk County for county-specific options, senior transportation across Long Island for older riders and their caregivers, and ambulette service on Long Island if you need to remain in your wheelchair during the trip. Private-pay trips are booked directly at (516) 754-7777, no broker involved.

How much does Medicaid pay providers for non-emergency transportation?

+

Rates also vary by region. The provider receives payment directly from Medicaid; the patient pays nothing.

Is there a Medicaid cab or taxi service in New York?

+

Yes, though it is not called a taxi officially. What most people mean by a "Medicaid cab" is free non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT): a scheduled car ride to a medical appointment, paid for by Medicaid. In New York you book it through MAS (Medical Answering Services) at 1-844-666-6270 at least 72 hours ahead, and a local transportation provider drives the trip. On Long Island, request DachiPlus as your provider and a sedan or wheelchair-capable vehicle picks you up door-to-door at no cost to you. Regular street taxis and rideshares are not covered.

Can I schedule Medicaid transportation online?

+

Yes. MAS offers online booking at medanswering.com: with a member account you can create, change and cancel trips at any time of day, any day of the week, and the same advance-notice guidelines apply as by phone (three days ahead for routine appointments). If you prefer the phone, MAS books trips at 1-844-666-6270, Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM. Either way, you can ask for DachiPlus as your transportation provider for trips in Nassau and Suffolk County. For private-pay trips (no Medicaid), book online anytime at dachiplus.com/book/ or call (516) 754-7777.

I can't log in to the MAS website. What should I do?

+

If you still cannot get in, call MAS at 1-844-666-6270 (Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM; urgent trips and hospital discharges 24/7) and book the trip by phone so it does not wait on the account. DachiPlus is not MAS: we cannot see, change or reset your MAS account. On the call you can still ask MAS to assign the trip to DachiPlus.

What do I need to create a MAS member account?

+

MAS asks for your first and last name, email address, cell phone number, Medicaid CIN or Medicaid number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your birth date. With the account you can create, change and cancel trips online at any time. If you are not sure your Medicaid coverage includes rides, call MAS at 1-844-666-6270 first; MAS suggests confirming that before you set up the account.
