Free Medicaid rides through MAS — and how to get DachiPlus

New York Medicaid covers your medical transportation at zero out-of-pocket cost. The process runs through MAS (Medical Answering Services). Here's exactly how to book — and how to request DachiPlus.

To schedule Medicaid transportation in New York, call MAS (Medical Answering Services) at 1-844-666-6270 at least 72 hours before your appointment — or book online through the MAS member portal. Have your Medicaid ID (CIN) and appointment details ready, and request DachiPlus as your provider for Nassau or Suffolk County. The ride is free; Medicaid pays MAS directly.

A deeper guide

Where can I find the complete Medicaid transportation guide?

We wrote a complete MAS guide: the 72-hour rule, exceptions, standing orders for dialysis, what trips qualify, and what to do if there's a problem. It's the most thorough MAS resource on the internet.

Can you schedule Medicaid transportation online?

Yes. Alongside the phone line, New York Medicaid members can request non-emergency medical transportation through the MAS online member portal at medanswering.com. Whether you book online or by phone, the 72-hour advance notice still applies for routine appointments, and you can name DachiPlus as your preferred provider in Nassau or Suffolk County. Recurring trips like dialysis work differently: ask your dialysis center or doctor's office to request a standing order through MAS, because MAS does not accept standing orders from members, family members, or transportation companies.

What you need before you call MAS

  • Your Medicaid CIN number (Client Identification Number)
  • The appointment date, time, and the medical provider's address
  • Your pickup address and any mobility needs (wheelchair, walker, companion)
  • Whether the trip is one-time or recurring (dialysis, chemotherapy, physical therapy)

What Medicaid transportation covers

MAS-coordinated rides cover medically necessary trips at no out-of-pocket cost — dialysis, chemotherapy and radiation, doctor and specialist visits, physical therapy, mental-health and substance-use appointments, and hospital discharges. If you go to dialysis, chemotherapy, or therapy at the same place on the same days each week, ask your dialysis center or doctor's office to request a standing order through MAS so you don't have to call for every trip. When your provider's office enters it, ask them to list DachiPlus as your preferred transportation provider. A standing order lasts up to six months and does not renew on its own. See the full eligibility rules and the 72-hour advance-booking rule for the details. DachiPlus provides Medicaid transportation across Nassau and Suffolk County — request us by name through MAS.

FAQ

Medicaid booking — FAQ

How do I book Medicaid medical transportation in Suffolk or Nassau County?

+

In New York, Medicaid transportation is coordinated through Medical Answering Services (MAS) at 1-844-666-6270. You call MAS at least 72 hours before your appointment, provide your Medicaid ID, appointment information, and any mobility needs, and ask for DachiPlus by name. MAS first decides the right type of transportation for your trip, then considers your choice of provider among the companies enrolled for that type. When MAS assigns the trip to us, we dispatch a vehicle.

What is MAS (Medical Answering Services)?

+

Medical Answering Services, commonly called MAS, is the broker that manages Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation across most of New York State, including Long Island. MAS verifies your Medicaid eligibility, confirms your appointment, and assigns a transportation provider. You can request a specific provider, like DachiPlus, when you call.

How far in advance do I need to schedule a Medicaid ride in New York?

+

New York State requires Medicaid transportation requests be made at least three business days (72 hours) before your appointment. Urgent or same-day medical needs may qualify for expedited scheduling — call MAS at 1-844-666-6270 to confirm.

How much does Medicaid medical transportation cost?

+

Medicaid medical transportation is free to eligible Medicaid members. There is no copay, fare, or out-of-pocket cost for trips approved through MAS. The provider bills Medicaid directly.

Can I request a specific NEMT provider through MAS?

+

Yes. When you call MAS, you can request a specific provider by name. New York's Medicaid Transportation Policy Manual (section 2.3, effective August 25, 2023) has MAS assign trips first by the medically appropriate mode of transportation, then by the enrollee's choice among participating transportation vendors. Ask the MAS representative to assign your trip to DachiPlus. If we have availability for your appointment window and your trip type, MAS can assign the trip to us. Choice can be limited when a Preferred Provider covers a certain region.

What happens if I miss my Medicaid transport pickup?

+

If you miss your scheduled pickup, call DachiPlus directly at (516) 754-7777 as soon as possible. Depending on the timing and our availability, we may be able to dispatch another vehicle, or you may need to contact MAS to reschedule. Repeated no-shows can affect future trip approvals.

Can a family member ride with me on Medicaid transportation?

+

Yes. Medicaid generally allows one approved escort to ride at no additional cost, particularly for minors, passengers with cognitive impairment, or anyone requiring assistance during the trip. Mention any companion when booking with MAS.

Do you offer recurring transportation for dialysis patients?

+

Yes. Dialysis is our largest recurring service category. For Medicaid riders, your dialysis center enters the standing order for your three-times-weekly schedule in the MAS system (under state policy, only the medical provider can) and can list DachiPlus as your preferred transportation provider. We then assign consistent drivers when possible and coordinate directly with your dialysis center.
